About LCSF

Our association is a grassroots collective representing agriculture and local business.

It was formed in 2024 following a series  meetings attended by hundreds of landholders and other community members increasingly concerned about a proposal for strip mining for rare earth minerals at  Wrattonbully near Naracoorte.

The association is advocating to protect our high value food and fibre resources, finite water assets, rich cultural heritage and unique biodiversity from controversial long-term invasive mining.

Mining exploration leases cover almost one-third of the Limestone Coast  from Keith to Mount Gambier, and into Victoria.  Of immediate concern is start-up company Australian Rare Earths’ intention to apply in 2026 for a mining lease for its Koppamurra project, 35kms south-east of Naracoorte.

The company plans a long-term “multi-generation” mining operation.

The Limestone Coast is one of South Australia’s greatest assets  –  an economic powerhouse generating more value per hectare than anywhere in the State.  Access to underground water underpins its success and supplies the region’s towns.

Recent history is littered with examples of malpractice and soil degradation from strip mining activities in Australian regional communities. We cannot risk irreparable contamination to such high-value production and key environmental assets.

The Association is asking that no mining licences be granted until an independent vulnerability assessment of the impact of controversial strip mining on all aspects of land, water, public health and the environment is completed.

This request is supported by Limestone Coast councils, primary and forestry industry organisations and major regional employers. Ultimately, high-value agriculture should rank as a priority land use, with safeguards for soil health, water quality, and long-term productivity.

Preserving Productive Land: We are dedicated to safeguarding our fertile soils, essential for key commodities, and the rich biodiversity that flourishes in our region. By preventing destruction and degradation, we aim to secure the agricultural productivity that sustains our economy and community.

Building Community Connections: Fostering strong relationships within our community is at the heart of our mission. Through outreach and education, we raise awareness about the importance of sustainable farming practices and highlight the detrimental impacts of extensive strip mining on our land and resources. Together, we can work towards sustainable solutions that benefit our commodities.

Championing Healthy Ecosystems: Maintaining the integrity of our landscapes is crucial. We strive to protect our ancient gum trees and vital water resources, which provide essential support for both agriculture and local wildlife. Our commitment to healthy ecosystems contributes to a balanced environment for future generations.

Advocating for Responsible Policies: We will engage with local, state, and national stakeholders to promote and implement policies that prioritize environmental stewardship and the long-term health of our agricultural sector. Our advocacy seeks to ensure that our local voices are heard in decision-making processes
